History
History

Founded in 1908 by William Wright Baldwin, Bellaire started off as a collection of little truck farms that were called “Westmoreland Farms.” Baldwin was the president of South End Land Company, a company that loaned money to business owners and repaired buildings in Harris County. Part of it was once William Marsh Rice’s ranch, which has over 9,000 acres of land.

Baldwin created the residential area and a agricultural trading section in the middle of Westmoreland Farms. Farmers from the midwest United States saw the advertisements about moving to advance their agricultural businesses, so many migrated to Bellaire. Baldwin either named the city after Bellaire, Ohio where he had a train rail line or because of the “good air” the city has. In 1918, Bellaire was incorporated as a city. During post-World War II in the late 1940s, the population rapidly increased because more houses, public schools, and businesses were built.
