Location

The Heights neighborhood is located northwest of downtown Houston. Not only is this area four miles away from the downtown area, but it is also northeast of Uptown. Uptown, also known as the Galleria Area, is a business district. Plus, the Heights sits between Shady Acres and Woodland Heights.

To the left of the neighborhood is Lazybrook/Timbergrove, which is two adjoining areas that make one neighborhood. To the right of the Heights is Near Northside, another historic neighborhood that rich in culture and diversity. The Oak Forest and Independent Heights both border the northern parts of the Heights.

Commute

Since the Heights is relatively close to downtown Houston, you will be able to commute back-and-forth. The neighborhood surrounded by multiple major freeways. These roads include North Loop West Freeway, the Interstate 45 Freeway, and the Katy Freeway.

The North Loop (I-610) runs from Highway 290 to Highway 90, both traveling east and west. Interstate 45 is an inner city loop in Houston that runs through the surrounding areas, including the Heights. Katy Freeway, or Interstate 10 runs west of downtown Houston to other neighborhoods within the city. There are many different options in traveling in and out of the Heights.

Culture

As this neighborhood is known as a historic district, the Heights has so much to appreciate. People who live in this area love to take advantage of the family fun activities available and the many parks and trails. Many become people who enjoy the outdoors because of this. This neighborhood combines urban with suburban. Also, the majority of residents in the Heights are food lover and architectural connoisseurs because of all the restaurants and landmarks. This fast-growing area has beautiful one and two-story homes for those who value sophistication and taste. It has more homeowners than renters in the area.

Schools

Within the Heights neighborhood, families are zoned to enroll their students in schools with the Houston Independent School District (HISD). This public school district is considered one of the largest districts in the state. It has over 200 schools with over 200,000 students enrolled. There are 29,000 staff members within the HISD that are providing the best education. Not only is this district on of the largest in Houston, but it is also within the top 10 largest in the United States.

Public schools in the Heights area such as Harvard Elementary School, Hamilton Middle School, and Heights High School all have stellar educational instruction. Outside of the HISD, there are several prestigious private schools that only provide the best enrichment programs and curriculum. Houston Outdoor Learning Academy and Saint Rose of Lima Catholic School are popular private schools that prepare students for academic success and personal growth.

Students who attend this school have the opportunity to participate in different clubs and organizations. Plus, the school has a competitive athletics department. Also, individuals who who sign up for the Bulldog Theater get to audition and star in plays such as Romeo & Juliet, Xanadu, and Ugly Lies the Bone.

Housing

The Heights neighborhood is compiled of mainly single-family homes. These homes can range from one-story to three-stories high. Many of them are traditional in architecture. The front porches and large backyard patios add charm to the homes. Most of the homes in the Heights area were once all-American bungalow-style homes with low-pitched roof lines, front porches, and exposed rafters. Other homes started off with Victorian architecture with cottage-like structures.

These single-family homes are undeniably beautiful and full of history. the Heights also has many apartments available for rent. These apartment complexes have plenty of amenities. Fitness centers, bike trails, and fireplaces are just a few of the many perks available for apartment residents. There are several mid rise condominiums with luxury suites and walk-in closets available in the area. Some even have private dog parks. Even so, there are much more single-family homes and apartments in the Heights.

Single-Family Homes
Many of the single-family homes in the Heights have bungalow-style architecture. They have spacious porches, open living and dining areas, and large windows to allow in natural light. Some have finished hardwood flooring and vintage fireplaces. Even the kitchens in these Heights homes are spectacular. Combining traditional with contemporary style, some of the kitchens have stainless steel appliances, granite countertops, and much cabinet space. These cozy single-family home are perfect small to large families, depending on the square footage and the amount of bedrooms.
