The Woodlands was birthed after George P. Mitchell was inspired to plan and develop a new community after attending a HUD conference. At the time, Mitchell was an oil industry investor that owned Mitchell Energy and Development Corporation. By 1972, homes were built nearby Houston, and the company had over 20,000 acres of land. The idea was to build a master-planned community with retail shops, businesses, hotels, affordable and expensive houses, and more.

This development officially manifested in 1974. Six years later, The Woodlands already had a population of over 11,000, a public library, six public schools, and six recreational parks. This city was booming and trying to accommodate all as more families moved into the area. Although initially there were many skeptics who questioned whether this area would be successful, The Woodlands has proven to be a popular township full of residential and commercial buildings and continues to grow.

The Woodlands has tons of parks and recreational areas for families and friends to enjoy the outdoors. It has over 7,000 acres of green land with more than 100 neighborhood parks. Plus, people can kayak, golf, and play tennis as well as hike. The Woodlands has 205 miles of trails.
For some art and culture, The Woodlands offers different exhibits and galleries. The Glade Cultural Center has wonderful international art and antiques. Nancy Bock Center for Performing Arts showcases students in the area and their musical and theatrical talents. Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion is an outdoor venue that hosts live concerts.

The major shopping and entertainments centers in the city are The Woodlands Mall, Market Street, and Hughes Landing. The Woodlands Mall has stores such as Dillard's, Forever 21, and Macy's. The Woodlands is in close proximity to some of Texas’ major roadways and highways. The eastern part of the city sits along Interstate 45 (I-45), which is entirely in the state of Texas. I-45 is a north-south highway that stretches from Dallas to Houston.

The highway shifts slightly east and runs all the way down to Galveston Causeway near the Gulf of Mexico. South of The Woodlands is the Grand Parkway, or the Texas State Highway 99. As it is still under construction to expand, people will soon be able to access other cities such as Baytown on SH 99.


Most of The Woodlands area is in Montgomery County, although a small part of it sit in Harris County. This city is about 30 miles north of downtown Houston, which is along Interstate 45. It is in the southeast region of the state of Texas and within the Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land metropolitan area. West of this city is Austin.

Other major cities such as Fort Worth and Dallas are slightly northwest of The Woodlands. The surrounding communities include Woodloch, Sleepy Hollow, Rayford, Willow, Hufsmith, and Egypt. About 43 square miles of the area is land, while 0.58 square miles of it is water.
