If you are gearing up to sell your home, it’d be wise to get familiar with what millennial buyers are looking for from homes! After all, this age group makes up the majority of first-time buyers right now, and the more of them that you can attract, the better negotiation power you may have.
As your Keller Williams Memorial real estate team, allow us to fill you in on what millennials look for most right now from a home:
- Pet-Friendly – In a top five list, young homebuyers listed more space for their dog at number three, higher on the list than more space for a child! Millennials love their dogs and therefore want their new home to be pet-friendly. In your listing, you could mention local walking trails or dog parks, and if you have an HOA, let buyers know if no pet restrictions are in place. If you’ve got a fenced yard, advertise that as well!
- Laundry Rooms – A recent report found that a separate laundry room was the number one feature that young buyers seek in a home! They are willing to forego extra square footage or high ceilings for a laundry room. You may not have known that this room in your house was so desirable, but now that you do, be sure to include photos of it in your listing, and consider upgrading it or staging it to sell! If you don’t have a laundry room, consider separating this space in your basement to feel more like one.
- Eco-Friendly – Young buyers tend to appreciate eco-friendly, energy-efficient upgrades more than older buyers. If looking for upgrades to add to your home before listing, consider something as big as solar panels on the roof, to something as minor as LED bulbs. Be sure to advertise these features in your listing. High-speed internet connection is also extremely important to millennials, as they have lots of technology and many work from home. Research an alternative if you do not have this.
- Fixer-Upper – While millennials do appreciate certain types of upgrades, many are also up for the challenge of purchasing a lower-priced home that needs work, and completing that work themselves. You can thank all the fixer-upper shows on HGTV for that! So if you have a Houston home that needs work, but you’re willing to sell as-is for a lower price, you might just find a slew of young buyers up for the challenge. Something to keep in mind!
